He is confronted and crushed by the presence of rascism, to a point where he believes that he is a loser. He learns to overcome it with a couple of steadfast mottos, "Big can beat small," and "First with your head and then with your heart," These were taught to him by Hoppie Groenewald.
The power of one is a novel by Bryce Courtenay. It is about a young boy called Peekay. He is a English boy living in South Africa with his mother, grandfather and two maids. He has a interest in boxing and is quite intelligent although he tries to hide it. They story is set around the time of world war 2. Throughout the story, he learns to think with his head and then his heart.

He finds himself helpless and alone with few friends. An important part in the novel is when he returns home and discovers he can create his own strength from inside himself. He is guided to this when Inkosi-inkosikazi a great medicine man shows him a brave place to go to in his mind. In his mind he is a young warrior, he is brave enough to leap over a waterfall. He is strong a powerful in this place in his mind. He can visit this place whenever he needs to. This shows him that his own mind is the most powerful tool that he has.

He is bullied until he meets Hoppie and then has an interest in boxing, he is also very intelligent. The story is placed in the middle of World War 2. In the story he learns that small can beat big and that is a lifelong lesson
