Every Saturday morning in the winter term I bike into town to play rugby. Winter's a great time. We live three miles out of town and the way in is mostly uphill, so I need to get a good early start to be in town by nine. On the way in I don't get a chance to look around or notice things very much because the going is fairly hard. Now and again where it gets a bit steep I have to stand up on the pedals and really tread hard.
But it's great getting off to rugby on a Saturday morning with my towel and change of clothes on the carrier, and pushing hard to get there by nine. It's great.
By the time I get to the grounds I'm really puffing and I know my face is about the colour of the clubhouse roof. But I'm ready to go on though. I can't wait to get on the field and get stuck into the game; I really go for it. I watch that ball and chase it all over the place. Where the ball goes, I go. I tackle, handle, kick, run, everything. I do everything I can think of and I feel good. Sometimes it's cold and muddy and when I get thrown down into the mud and come up all mucky I feel great, because all the mud shows that I've really made a game of it. The dirtier I get the better I like it because I don't want to miss out on anything.
Then after the game I strip off and get under the shower in the clubroom, and sometimes the water is boiling hot and sometimes cold as anything. And whatever it is, you're hopping up and down and getting clean, and yelling out to your mates about the game and saying is it hot or cold in your one.
I need a drink then. I get a drink from the dairy across the road and the dairy's always jammed full of us boys getting drinks. You should hear the noise, you should really hear it.
The going home is one of the best parts of all. I hop on my bike and away I go, hardly any pushing at all. Gee it's good. I can look about me and see everything growing. Cabbages and caulis, potatoes and all sorts of vegetables. And some of the paddocks are all ploughed up and have rows of green just showing through. All neat and tidy, and not much different to look at from the coloured squares of knitting my sister does for Girl Guides. You see all sorts of people out in the gardens working on big machines or walking along the rows weeding and hoeing: that's the sort of place it is around here. Everything grows and big trucks take all the stuff away, then it starts all over again.
But, I must tell you. Past all the gardens, about a mile and a half from where I live, there's a fairly steep rise. It's about the steepest part on the way home and I really have to puff up that bit. Then I get to the top and there's a long steep slope going down. It's so steep and straight it makes you want to yell, and I usually do. That's not all though. just as you start picking up speed on the down slope you get this. great whiff of pigs. Poo. Pigs. It makes you want to laugh and shout it's such a stink. And as I go whizzing down the stretch on my bike I do a big sniff up, a great big sniff, and get a full load of the smell of pigs. It's such a horrible great stink that I don't know how to describe it. We've got a book in our library at school and in it there's a poem about bells and the poem says `joyous'. `The joyous ringing of bells' or `bells ringing joyously', something like that. Well `joyous' is the word I think of when I smell the pigs. joyous. A joyous big stink of pigs. It's really great.
It's not far to my place after I've taken the straight. When I get home I lean my bike up against the shed and I feel really hot and done for. I don't go straight inside though. Instead I flop myself down on the grass underneath the lemon tree and I pick a lemon and take a huge bite of it. The lemons on our tree are as sour as sour, but I take a big bite because I feel so good. It makes me pull awful faces and roll over and over in the grass, but I keep on taking big bites until the lemon is all gone, skin and everything. Then I pick another lemon and eat that all up too because I don't want to miss a thing in all my life.
We have an old lady living next to us. She's pretty old and she doesn't do much except walk around her garden. One day I heard her say to Mum, `He's full of beans that boy of yours. Full of beans.'

Paragraph 1
I think the main idea is that in the text this boy who according to the text seems from the past goes around with lots of energy and lots of enthusiasm. He is very self-confident, because he bikes to rugby every Saturday morning as the kids of today gets driven to sports and locations. This shows that he would have to be enthusiastic about what he does because you can’t bike into town with a lack of enthusiasm. Another thing I like about this boy is that he doesn’t want to waste a minute of his life, in other words, he wants to live life to the best he can. This means that he wants to get active; he doesn’t want to spend hours inside playing video games and watching T.V, this is a skill I would like to have.
Paragraph 2
I find this main idea very interesting because not many kids in today times have the enthusiasm to bike 3 miles into town and run around and play rugby on an early Saturday morning, most kids sleep in and then wake up and the watch T.V. “But it's great getting off to rugby on a Saturday morning with my towel and change of clothes on the carrier, and pushing hard to get there by nine.” This is a sentence I find really interesting because one theme I found in this story in our previous exercise was time management, this kid he has to wake up early every Saturday morning to rush on his bike to Rugb.
We have been asked to write a response to a blog called `Beans’ I will be talking about the boy’s enjoyment in everything he does which I think is the main idea in the story. I will also discuss about what I think the theme is in the story.
I think that the boy finds everything he does fun because in the story it says `Its great getting off to rugby on a Saturday morning with my towel and change of clothes on the carrier, and pushing hard to get there by nine. It's great. By the time I get to the grounds I'm really puffing and I know my face is about the colour of the clubhouse roof. But I'm ready to go on though. I can't wait to get on the field and get stuck into the game’ this is what I think shows that he loves everything he does and is full of energy.
I think he has a great way of doing everything with his rugby to his push to get there I think he does it because he has lots of great attitude.
I think he is great because he takes everything on with a great attitude he likes to get muddy in his rugby games “ Sometimes it's cold and muddy and when I get thrown down into the mud and come up all mucky I feel great, because all the mud shows that I've really made a game of it. The dirtier I get the better I like it because I don't want to miss out on anything”. And he loves his bike ride to his games even though its really hard “On the way in I don't get a chance to look around or notice things very much because the going is fairly hard. Now and again where it gets a bit steep I have to stand up on the pedals and really tread hard”. As you can see he’s got a lot of good attitude and he makes everything he does fun to do.
He also has a lot of great energy like in his rugby games “I really go for it. I watch that ball and chase it all over the place. Where the ball goes, I go. I tackle, handle, kick, run, everything. I do everything I can think of and I feel good”. He has so much energy it’s like he has an endless supply of coffee. He really has an action packed life and he really makes the most out of his life.
The theme is about attitude and the main kid in the story has heaps of it this is what im writing about. He shows that he is willing to do things like bike over two kilo meters in the winter just to get to rugby game and most of it is uphill. I love how he would put 100 percent into going to a rugby game. Then he is playing rugby and doesn’t want to miss out a thing.
I wish I would be able to cycle 3 kilometres up a hill just to play a sport even if it was with a family or friend I wouldn’t be able I would get my family to drop me of or catch a bus not many kids will do that these days even if its rain a bet he would still cycle but now these day we would use cell phone or email™ to get picked up I love how he just cycles happily home he has got lots of attitude unlike most kids today. He says “great whiff of pigs. Poo. Pigs. It makes you want to laugh and shout it's such a stink. And as I go whizzing down the stretch on my bike I do a big sniff up, a great big sniff, and get a full load of the smell of pigs. It's such a horrible great stink that I don't know how to describe it.” I love how he like everything unlike these days were we would hate the smell and leave when he is having a grawsome (great and awesome) time. Kids these day are nothing like they were we’ve gotten worse I think he stays out side with no technology and now we stay inside with tv on laptop on and all sorts of things I think we should not have that many cars but bikes not use are technology all the time just play outside and have fun.
Last but not least I think he doesn’t care what people think about him but now we need to were the right close have the right hair and stay in fashion.
I think that the main theme of the story is being grateful for life and enjoying it well you still can. I think this because the main character does things he hates for fun and enjoys them.
Like purposely smelling pig droppings and taking huge bites of lemons and says “The lemons on our tree are as sour as sour, but I take a big bite because I feel so good. It makes me pull awful faces and roll over and over in the grass, but I keep on taking big bites until the lemon is all gone, skin and everything. Then I pick another lemon and eat that all up too because I don't want to miss a thing in all my life”. He also gives everything his best and likes to get dirty “because all the mud shows that I've really made a game of it. The dirtier I get the better I like it because I don't want to miss out on anything.”
All these things support my Idea which leads me to the conclusion that I’m most likely right
I believe that the main idea in the text Beans is this boy’s attitude as he is able to push himself so hard to do so much in a single morning and do so well. The fact that this all happens on a cold winter morning.
Every Saturday morning in the months of winter, the boy rides his bike three miles to town so he can arrive on time to get to rugby by nine in the morning “But it's great getting off to rugby on a Saturday morning with my towel and change of clothes on the carrier, and pushing hard to get there by nine. It's great”. The thing is now people of our age are just being driven to rugby or whatever sport they are playing. What even increases the distance from what he is like and how we are today is that the ride to the game is mostly uphill, and then he rides his bike back.
The main idea of the text is the fact that this boy’s attitude is grateful and happy towards everything in life, he stands out from typical kids today is he always has a very positive attitude. The boy is positive towards everything; he seems to be so enthusiastic and grateful about everything in the story. He is enthusiastic and happy about the positive and even the negative things in life. I will be telling you about why this boy stands out from the boys today, why this boy is so happy. People today seem to take things for granted and are being ungrateful. Here is an example of the text “But its great getting off to rugby on a Saturday morning with my towel and change of clothes on the carrier, and pushing hard to get there by nine. It’s great. This would be a great attitude to have – I wish I had that attitude towards life.
The reason I find the positive attitude of the boy interesting is because boys ‘this day and age’ are sometimes negative towards things and are ungrateful about things, even though they are often being spoilt. This boy isn’t spoilt very much, and he is 100% grateful of things he has in life. “You don’t know what you’ve got ‘till it’s gone” is how the old saying goes. The boy is completely making the most of his life and seems to be having the time of his life by being joyful while doing it. Another example – “Where the ball goes, I go. I tackle, handle, kick, run, everything. I do everything I can think of and I feel good. Sometimes it's cold and muddy and when I get thrown down into the mud and come up all mucky I feel great, because all the mud shows that I've really made a game of it. The dirtier I get the better I like it because I don't want to miss out on anything.” Not only is the boy grateful and enthusiastic, he is determined, “We live three miles out of town and the way in is mostly uphill, so I need to get a good early start to be in town by nine.
It's great.” This boy is enthusiastic, grateful, determined – Special.
BEANS
The main point of this text beans is altitude of the people then and people now days have wore attitude.
Because in the 1st paragraph he bikes to rugby early in the morning so it shows the kid really what’s to play rugby now days don’t because their parents drive them to sport but he bikes so that shows that he has a good attitude to his sport.
In the text he says that “the muddier he gets the better it is” so that show that he has good attitude to the sport he plays (rugby) and today’s people play but don’t have a big attitude towards sport.
At the end he says “I don’t won’t to miss a single thing in life “so that show me that this boy wants go for anything that he gets a chance for it.
The main idea for me is that he is so enthusiastic and defiantly more so than the kids of today’s era this is because you had to do more things when he was young you had to bike some were or walk you couldn’t sit there turn a key and be there in minutes and that was it everybody had to be like that also another thing other than transport was that you had to do things manually there was no pushing buttons or anything like that.
I find this interesting because not many kids these days do that some people would say that technology opens you up to a whole new world but what they don’t mention is that it is a world of restriction. It quotes in the text that “it is great getting to rugby on a Saturday morning’’ I mean most kids would be still lying in bed with their mums nagging them to get up but not him. The text also states that as soon as he gets home he feels “really hot and done for I don’t go straight inside though” this indicates that there is still more things he wants to first instead of going inside and curling up and doing nothing else for the day.
Another point that I want to highlight is that he loves life and life is wonderful to him you can tell this because in the last paragraph it states “I don’t want to miss a thing in all my life.” And this really surprises me because kids of today’s age don’t want to do everything they have comfort circles that they cannot break and this seems really weird because kids should be willing to try new things instead of having a routine life and this concludes the fact that I myself would like to live in that age of no restrictions.
For this article I will be focusing on a main idea of attitude. This article is also on and about the story “beans” this is a piece of writing about a boy and his Saturday morning, his attitude and the life we live today. I will also make references to the text and present times.
I feel attitude is a main idea because the text says many things such as; “It’s great” and “he’s full of beans that boy of yours. Full of beans.” The first statement is made by the main character and the second is said to his mother by his neighbour (an old lady). I believe these statements are both referring to his life and energy in the boy’s case he loves life and has a good attitude towards anything and everything he encounters. I also admire the boys attitude and determination to get stuck in and bike a whole 3kilometres into town just to play a rugby game and bike back again. In our society kids would much rather sleep in and lounge around on a Saturday.
I think that the main theme of the story is being grateful for life and enjoying it well you still can. I think this because the main character does things he hates for fun and enjoys them(well not hates hates but like how you hate it when someone farts its anoying but amusing.
All these things support my Idea which leads me to the conclusion that I’m most likely right
I think the main idea in the “Beans” article is the boy’s attitude towards everything.
I find his attitude very fascinating, His attitude towards everything it’s amazing because he gives everything a try and does it the best he can. In the article it says “Every Saturday morning in the winter term I bike into town to play rugby. Winter's a great time. We live three miles out of town and the way in are mostly uphill, so I need to get a good early start to be in town by nine.” This shows the determination he has to rugby, Compared to the kids now they will sleep in maybe play video games or watch TV. When they wake up, this is because they are lazy there would be no way for a kid to bike 3 miles uphill in a cold Saturday morning for a rugby game. I think the way children think now is affected by the technology.
I also found out that “The dirtier I get the better I like it because I don't want to miss out on anything.”This proves that he is very adventurous and very enthusiastic. He will try to give everything a go, unlike children this day where they are lazy and not interested.
So I think he really has an action packed life, and he lives it to the fullest.
In this story the boy seems to want to enjoy life at the max. He trys his hardest unlike some kids nowadays who would never get up in a Saturday winter morning to bike 3 miles to town and up a steep hill to a rugby game!He has alot of energy and seems to enjoy what he does.
If only kids nowadays would do what he does, enjoying life outdoors. He does say the bike ride up is fairly hard and he dosent get to see everything around him but after that he said "But it's great getting off to rugby on a Saturday morning with my towel and change of clothes on the carrier, and pushing hard to get there by nine. It's great." Now thats positive.
His life is awesome, most kids would never think of doing this.
This text seems to be written in the past, comparing, non-explicitly, children then to children now. The boy in the text is full of enthusiasm for everything, for no child now would bike three miles into town in winter, to play rugby. They would be driven.
His enthusiasm for life makes me want to be like that, live like that. He eats lemons and sniffs the smell of pigs, because he wants to experience everything in life, and get the most out of every second.
“Sometimes it's cold and muddy and when I get thrown down into the mud and come up all mucky I feel great, because all the mud shows that I've really made a game of it. The dirtier I get the better I like it because I don't want to miss out on anything”. I find this sentence interesting, because it shows he really does want to experience everything, no matter if it means getting muddy, or pushed down, or being cold and wet.
This boy also has a really great supply of energy, biking to rugby and giving it all he’s got while he’s there. “I really go for it. I watch that ball and chase it all over the place. Where the ball goes, I go. I tackle, handle, kick, run, everything. I do everything I can think of and I feel good”.
He is determined yet positive about biking all the way to rugby “We live three miles out of town and the way in is mostly uphill, so I need to get a good early start to be in town by nine. On the way in I don't get a chance to look around or notice things very much because the going is fairly hard. Now and again where it gets a bit steep I have to stand up on the pedals and really tread hard.”
So to sum it all up, I believe the main idea of the text is that this boy’s attitude towards everything is amazing, and why can’t we be more like him? He is enthusiastic, determined and positive all at the same time.
My opinion on "Beans" is that the theme is how you should live life to the fullest while you can because you only live life once. As we can infer from the text he is, no matter what, trying to do as much as he can during his lifetime. I can compare myself to the guy because I try (even if sometimes I don't succeed) to live my life to the fullest.
From what I get from the text the main idea is best described by the following passage "When I get home I lean my bike up against the shed and I feel really hot and done for. Then I pick another lemon and eat that all up too because I don't want to miss a thing in all my life". This part of the text is the most important because it proves that he wants to take in everything, do everything because even after a big ride then a game of rugby he still felt great. He took in everything around him the sights, and even the smell of the pigs. The part with the lemons is like pinching yourself, it makes you realize what you are doing is real.
In my opinion everyone should do what the guy in the story did because that way even if it doesn't always turn out right, when you die you will have a feeling in your heart knowing you have lived life to its fullest.
My opinion on 'Beans' is that the boy wants to live his life to the fullest and has a positive attitude towards everything. Paragraph 3 ' I can't wait to get on the field and get stuck into the game; I really go for it. The dirtier I get the better I like it because I don't want to miss out on anything.' shows that he is enjoying what he has got and tries his best at whatever he is doing. I think technology has changed our attitude and people would much rather sleep in and then take a car to their sport than to wake up early and bike to their sport.
My opinion on the Story “Beans” is that the theme is the Boys attitude to everything he does.
I find his way of life amazing as his attitude towards everything he does describes his life. In the article it says “Every Saturday morning in the winter term I bike into town to play rugby. Winter's a great time. We live three miles out of town and the way in are mostly uphill, so I need to get a good early start to be in town by nine.” It shows determination and love to play rugby. “But it's great getting off to rugby on a Saturday morning with my towel and change of clothes on the carrier, and pushing hard to get there by nine. It's great.
By the time I get to the grounds I'm really puffing and I know my face is about the colour of the clubhouse roof. But I'm ready to go on though. I can't wait to get on the field and get stuck into the game; I really go for it.” This shows how he has a very positive to all ways of life and he really wants to live his life to the fullest.
In my opinion everyone should live there life like this, knowing you’ve had the best time you could ever had.
I think Beans is about how a young boy is so willing to try every thing that life throws at him. To me the theam is that most kids these days would rather sit arond and play video games or watch tv rather than going outside and being active.
"Beans"
In my opinion, the beans article is about the boy’s attitude towards everything. He is grateful for everything he has got and is enthusiastic, grateful and determined
What I find interesting is the way that he does everything with lots of energy and enthusiasm. “Every Saturday morning in the winter term I bike into town to play rugby. Winter's a great time. We live three miles out of town and the way in are mostly uphill, so I need to get a good early start to be in town by nine. It's great.” He is getting up early and using energy to cycle to his rugby game and he thinks it’s great. Nowadays children would wake up late, watch TV and then get driven to the game.
“Then I get to the top and there's a long steep slope going down. It's so steep and straight it makes you want to yell, and I usually do. That's not all though. Just as you start picking up speed on the down slope you get this great whiff of pigs. Poo. Pigs. It makes you want to laugh and shout it's such a stink.” He is trying to make everything funny and laugh about it instead of nowadays going slow down a hill because you are scared of falling off and holding your breath as you go past the stinky pigs. If you were in a car you now would probably stick the windows up.
Beans
In my opinion the theme of this story is about the boy’s energy and how he lives his life to the full.
The theme is shown throughout the whole article. Examples of this in the text are:
Every Saturday morning of the winter term the boy would get up and bike into town to play rugby. He lives 3 miles out of town and it’s mostly uphill so he needs to have an early start to get into town by 9. He doesn’t get much of a chance to look around because there is always a steep hill coming around the corner and sometimes it’s so steep he has to stand on the pedals and tread really hard. It’s great though he says, getting off to rugby on a Saturday morning with my towel and a change of clothes and pushing hard to get there by nine.
Now day’s boys would just get a ride from their Mum or Dad and sleep in for as long as they could before going out. I do believe that boys today do share the same passion for rugby, especially with the Rugby World Cup coming up.
On the way home the boy would hop back onto his bike again and have the time of his life racing and whizzing all the way home. There is this one hill, the boy says, that is so steep and straight it makes him yell when speeding down but that’s not all. Soon he hits this big smell of pig poo that the boy thoroughly enjoys and it makes him laugh.
Like the boy, a lot of boys would go racing down the hill but have a sour face when hitting the smell of pig poo. However, I do know one exception, a friend of mine (a boy) from primary school would love the smell of it.
When the boy arrives home he leans his bike up against the shed and lies down underneath the lemon tree. He picks a couple of lemons and sits there and eats them both skin and all, pulls funny faces each times he takes a bite but doesn’t stop because he doesn’t want to miss a thing in his life.
Now days as soon as boys get home a lot them would sit down in front of a game or TV of some sort. They would get their Mums to bring them cookies and not sit outside and eat lemons!
His energy is really unbelievable. I know for a fact that I would not sit under a lemon tree and eat two whole lemons or race down a hill laughing at the smell of pigs. Maybe I should give this a go, sounds like fun!
The theme in this text is the boy's love of life. He makes the most of every opportunity and really enjoys all the things he does.
Even though the boy lives three miles out of town he thinks "winter is great". He has to ride his bike uphill most of the way but this doesn't bother him because he loves rugby. He loves playing rugby and can't wait to get on the field even though he is bright red from cycling. "Where ever the ball goes I go". The dirtier he gets the more he likes it because it shows determination and that he played so hard.
He even loves the shower in the clubrooms, "sometimes the water is boiling or freezing cold" what ever the temperture he loves it.
When he goes to get a drink from the dairy he thinks the sound of all the boys is fasinating and "you should really hear it"
After rugby he even loves going home. "The going home is the best part of all". He gets the chance to see everything around him. The vegetable gardens and all the paddocks all ploughed with green shoots, "all neat and tidy".
As the boy gets closer to home he comes to a hill it's the steepest part. He loves to yell as he goes down the hill because it is so steep. The boy even loves the smell of the pigs that he passes on his way home. "great whiffs of pigs" a joyous big stink of pigs" "it's really great".
Even when the boy gets home and is really tired from his rugby and his bike ride home he finds something to be happy about. He throws himself on the grass underneath his lemon tree picks a lemon and eats it "it makes me pull awful faces and roll over and over in the grass".
Everything the boy does in his day makes him really happy "I dont want to miss a thing in life" says the boy.
In my opinion the theme of this text is to live up your life to the full. You should think everything in the positive way and you should always think that you will have a good time if you just go for it without negative thoughts about it.
In here, the boy is a very positive boy. When he says the smell of the pigs 'stinks' he says it is joyous. Another part is this; 'Sometimes it’s cold and muddy and when I get thrown down into the mud and come up all mucky I feel great, because all the mud shows that I've really made a game of it. The dirtier I get the better I like it because I don't want to miss out on anything.’ It means that he wants to try out everything in the world. It makes him feel brilliant as he has reached his goal making the most of his game. He doesn't care if it is bad or not because in his world there is no such thing called ‘bad’. In his world all the things he can see is on the light side. The boy likes everything and the noisiest; action packed and extreme in things makes him feel even better. Another thing is that when he eats a lemon he feels the sour taste. Although he pulls awful faces he still finishes everything; skin, flesh, everything, all gone. This shows that he is determined to reach his goal and never give up. Here is an example after he arrives home from rugby; ‘I don’t go straight inside though. Then I pick another lemon and eat that all up too because I don’t want to miss a thing in all my life.’ The key point is this part; ‘I don’t want to miss a thing in all my life.’ This means that he gives everything the best try he can and that he doesn't want to miss out on anything.
The title comes from the paragraph because he is so full of beans. The reason why he is described as ‘full of beans’ is that beans are bouncy.
