Making Ice

People have used ice for thousands of years for keeping things cool. The Ancient Greeks knew how to make ice by boiling water and then putting it into snow. The Ancient Romans carted snow and ice from the mountains. Indian emperors sent horsemen into the mountains to bring back snow and ice for making fruit flavoured ices.

A hundred years ago in India, in places where the days were hot but the nights were very cold, the British who were living there made their own ice. Water was poured into shallow pans in the evening, and they were put outside. By the early hours of the morning the water was frozen. It was then chipped out of the pans and placed in lined storehouses that they had specially built.

Do you think it was worth the effort for the British in India to make ice? Give a full explanation of your thoughts and opinions.

I think it wasn't worth it because if the days were very hot the ice would have melted very quickily and it would have been a waste, and if the storehouses were metal the ice would have melted even quicker because metal heats up really quickly.

I think it wasn't worth it because what would they do with ice??? They probably couldn't preserve food with it because the water they use mighht be unsafe and might spread germs on the food. Plus the ice wouldn't stay cold ice for long as the days in India can get really hot, and it would just be a waste of precious water.

Yes I do think it was worth the effort because how could we keep our fizzy drinks cold on athletics day and also too store it for the hot days and without ice we wouldn't have iceblocks and we could and we also need ice for machines and sports so in ice skating the person who made the machines that recover the ice that has been used. so ice is needed for people and enertainment.

I think that making ice was worth the effort because they could slip it in to their drinks and keep them cool in the heat of the day. It also could be sucked and put down peoples backs to keep them cool. People may have been daunted by the fact that they have to keep remembering to put out trays and pans to make ice but if they put out their pans after their dinner it would not be such a hassel.

YES. i think it was worth the effort because we wouldnt have an easy way to make colds drinks and having ice is good for hot days because u can get dehydrated and cold water is better for hot days.

For the early British and Greeks and whoever else made else in the early years, I don't thnk it was worth their trouble and time to cool down their water or rum or whatever else they had. It does feel good to have a cold drinks on hot days, but in the time when your going to be having a drink, ice doesn't really cool it down that much. What was the real point, instead of spending all that time making ice, they could've put their water in the snow. And also in the summer time, how would you get the ice. Putting your beer or wine in a bucket of ice and then someone drinks it then it would be worth the effort, but that only happens at parties. And how often does that happen?

I think that there was no point in making there own ice because all they could only keep there food cold with it and it would have been really diffluct to move the ice without breaking it so they would have not alot of ice. They could have just brought the fruit flavoured ice that the Indians were making and they could have made money out of that buy selling some of the ice that they could have brought.

I agree with them when there going into the mountains and getting there own ice and not beaing lase and buying it from the shop.

Yes i do think it was worth the effot to get water and make ice. on a hot day i would like to go have a drink of cold water then drinking warm water and it more refreshing cold. it wouldnt be hard for the indias because they just have to put water and put it oud side but for the british i wouldnt think is worth the effot because when it snows it cold and you wouldnt drink as much water and it would be cold enough anyway.

i think it would be a great idare to make ice in india because it might of been hot in india and the drink probley would of been warm with out ice so instead of having warm water they made ice to keep their drinks nice and cold and also for their food they would want to keep their food nice and cold for storage.

I think that it was worth the it beacuse imagin this its a really hot day and you are in desperet need of water and you find your water supply only to find that its boling hot water a you take one is and it tastes all muggey and damp mean while the person next to you is drinking cold refreshing water, and this is beacuse you just didnt think that it was that inportent to put some ice in a bowl at night witch takes about a cople of seconds.

i don't think it was worth it because what would ice be a use to them if it were very hot and before they could cool themselves it would melt and people would have only a short time to cool them self

i think it is worth it because if they didnt have ice in their drinks their drinks would be warm in the heat of the day and not nice to drink.

I agree with sam and Bently, What is the use in wasting precious water which is probably precious in such a ot country when it will just all melt in a store room. Another point if the ice melts they will want more and more ans will just be wasting precious water which could be used for better and more usefull things. Did the Indians ans the British compensate them making ice with the amount of the water?

I think that it was worth it because in those days it was very hard for people to keep food preserved and this way, by using ice, would have helped a lot more. If the chest they kept the ice in was able to contain the ice and keep it cold it would definately be worthwile.

I think that it was worth making ice back then because they would have nothing to preserve their food back then so they would need something to keep their food cold. also the days were extremely hot so they could have used it for cooling themselves down.

how did they find out about ice and how it freezes. did they see it and try to copy it

were is the first place there saw ice becuase they had to have seen it some were or they would have to be smart to figure out that ice is mde from water.
They used ice to cool foods but wouldnt it be a bit dangerous becuase they could just use water that had been poisoned or water that is unsafe to drink and they mite get very sick.
also when they get sick there is no cure becuase medicine wasnt that great in the old days so eventuly people would die and bugs would spread. So maybye ice wasnt a good idea in the old times.

I think that some of these ancient civilisations were very smart, but the indain-britain idea of making the ice could be classified as water wasting and dumb. Espically if they were not near a river for they would soon run out of drinking water, but at the same time it was smart because they would always have a fresh batch of ice each day and the food and store room would always be clean because of the carting of the old ice and water out and the placing of new ice.
