Buskers

Buskers earn money by performing in public places, usually outdoors. If passers-by like the performance, they may drop money into a hat or a container that the busker puts out.

Buskers perform a range of acts usch as dancing, juggling, playing music, pretending to be statues, doing magic tricks, miming or singing.

Some will follow people, imitating the way they walk and their actions. Some will wrtie a personalised poem for you for a small fee.

Buskers are more commonly seen in summer and while moste people would say that they are a great asset, that they bring colour and laughter to the streets, or that their music is enjoyable, others think they are a nuisnace or that they ought to get a real job.

For full time buskers, it is a real job. They travel around the country and overseas ot large busking festivals. There they can comapre themselves with others and have the opporutunity to gather new ideas for their acts.

Robyn was working on the computer. She didnt know much about how a computer worked. She just wanted to write her letter on it and then print it. It would look neat and be easy for Mr Jarman to read. She was a capable writer. There would be no spelling mistakes either. That was important in a busy, modern, professional office where letters and reports are written daily.

Thinking carefully about what she was writing, she slowly worked on.

When it was finally finished she looked at the letter proudly. She was a quick learner and felt sure that Mr Jarman would give her the job.

2012 Making Ice

People have used ice for thousands of years for keeping things cool. The Ancient Greeks knew how to make ice by boiling water and then putting it into snow. The Ancient Romans carted snow and ice from the mountains. Indian emperors sent horsemen into the mountains to bring back snow and ice for making fruit flavoured ices.
A hundred years ago in India, in places where the days were hot but the nights were very cold, the British who were living there made their own ice. Water was poured into shallow pans in the evening, and they were put outside. By the early hours of the morning the water was frozen. It was then chipped out of the pans and placed in lined storehouses that they had specially built.

Give a full explanation if you agree or disagree that it was worthwhile for the British to make ice? Be sure you justify your view.
